Justin Jarod Harris, of Arlington, Ga., died Saturday, August 6, 2022, of gunshot wounds. He was 21.

The shooting took place just after lunch on Saturday outside his home with family members inside.

Two individuals were arrested in connection with the murder with gang activity suspected. The Early County Sheriff’s office responded to the call, but the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now in charge of the investigation.

Jan Howard Barron of Blakely is the former media specialist at Calhoun County High School. Barron was heartbroken over the death of one of her former students. “I’m afraid that the headline about a young man being shot has become so familiar that people won’t see the magnitude of this loss. Justin was an awesome young man who was never in trouble. He was kind, hardworking, and respectful. This senseless tragedy has devastated his family, our community, and all who loved him,” said Barron.

Calhoun County schools were closed Thursday and Friday of last week in response to law officials recommendations. School officials, in conjunction with state and local law enforcement, are taking every precaution to ensure the safety of students and employees. Dr. Erika Green of Calhoun County schools issued a letter to the parents and community. Parents and the community in all schools are encouraged to follow those suggestions.

Editor’s Note: The full text of the letter sent by Dr. Green is printed on page 3. It contains outstanding advice for all parents of school age children. It is highly recommended.
