December City meeting


The Blakely Mayor and Council addressed a full agenda at their December meeting Tuesday, Dec. 3.

The council approved a bid of $32,700 from Choice for renovation of the criminal investigation department on Magnolia Street. The council also approved a $6,359 bid from Harris Brown for security alarm and cameras.

Due to the vacancy of the District 2, Post 1 city council seat created by the death of Charles Middleton, the council adopted an ordinance authorizing a special election on March 24, 2020, to fill Middleton’s unexpired term.

He was elected in November 2017 to serve a four-year term which runs through December 2021. Qualifying for the election will be Dec. 18-19-20, 2019.

The council held the first reading of an ordinance providing for the adoption of a budget for the 2020 fiscal year.

A budget hearing was held Dec. 6. and a special meeting will be held Dec. 16 at 5:30 p.m. for the purpose of adopting the budget.

City building official Mark Hawkins reported the planning commission had tabled a request by Meredith Whitehead for rezoning of 25.5 acres on Redbud Street, known as the stockyard property, from R-1 to PUD (Planned Unit Development) was tabled until a preliminary site plan was available.

The council heard a law enforcement update and report on November activities. Craig Hughes gave the council a financial presentation and an update on city projects.

The council adopted an ordinance adopting a “Revised, Amended and Restated Retirement plan.”

The council adopted the first Tuesday of each month as the regular city council meeting dates during 2020. They also approved the holiday observances for the year.

The council approved renewal of the following alcoholic beverage licenses:

Package beer license – Cannon Oil, BJ’s Express, By-Pass Mini Mart, Amoco Food Mart and Sharvil 2019 Corp.

Package beer and wine license: Quick Buys, CVS, Piggly Wiggly, Jay Juhrima and Harvey’s

Package beer, wine and liquor license: Ghotra Liquors and Canna Wines

Beer on premises license: Pizza Hut, Old School Club 21, Pokey’s, Village Pizza and Club Gold Rush

Beer and wine on premises license: South Main Food and Funny Girl

Alcohol by the drink license: Town & Country Club, The 4th Out and Coco’s Lounge

The council reappointed McArthur Jones to the Planning Commission and Freddy Speight and Al Hutchins to the Southwest Georgia Regional Council.
