City sets date for special election


At last week’s city council meeting, the council held the first reading of an ordinance calling for a March 24, 2020, special election to fill the District 2 Post 1 council seat, a vacancy created by the untimely death of Counciman Charles Middleton

Sanitation and Transfer Station manager Gabe Jordan discussed a waste disposal contract renewal proposal from Waste Managment with the council. The council approved the contract renewal.

The contract renewal begins January 2020 and extends through 2022. There will be no increase of the $25.30/ton rate the first year. The second year will see a 1.5% increase to $25.68/ton, and another 1.5% increase to $26.07/ton the third year.

The council approved the following rezoning requests: Robert Evans’ request to rezone 286 Maple St. from Commercial to R-2 and Hattie Mae Perkins’ request to rezone 963 Howell St. from R-1 to R-2.

Police Chief Will Caudill presented a law enforcement report of October. Craig Hughes presented a report on city projects including development of a parking lot just off Court Square on North Main and replacement of flooring at the Civic Center.

The council adopted a Language Access Plan and a Housing Policies and Procedures mandated for applicants and recipients of federal Community Development Black Grants.

The council approved a joint resolution providing for the closure of joint bank accounts and credit card accounts in the name of the Early County Dept. of Public Safety effectively discontinued by the city, county and sheriff ’s agreement to dissolve the Dept. of Public Safety. The resolution also authorizes the Sheriff’s Office to establish accounts deemed necessary to replace those Public Safety accounts.

Resolutions were adopted by the council which enable the city to apply for CDBG and provide necessary matching funds.

The city council adopted resolutions authorizing the Southwest Georgia Regional Commission to submit a Community HOME Investment Program applications, providing for application and administration fees and waiving permit fees.

The council held a first reading of an ordinance adopting a “Revised, Amended and Restated Retirement plan.”

The council denied a request by Priscilla George for the closure of Court Square for a victory celebration.

Richie Smith speaking on behalf of the “Community Involvement Association” requested clarity from the city on answers to their previous questions.
