Blakely enters Flint River Baseball League

THE Boy Scouts of America Chehaw Council honored Charles Barton Rice Jr., at their annual Friends of Scouting Luncheon. Rice was presented with the 2011 Distinguished Citizen Award.

FAMILY members of the late Vicki Burden proudly displayed her diploma that was granted posthumously at Bainbridge College graduation.

GAINES Harrell, six-year-old son of Dana and Jonathon Harrell, traveled to Panama City Beach to compete in the Memorial Day at the Beach tournament with his travel baseball team, the Dothan Post 12 Thunder, which won the championship.

SEAN Driscoll’s Story Ship will dock at Lucy Hilton Memorial Library tomorrow morning for a combination of animation, puppetry, comedy-theater, magic and music.

June 6, 1996

IT was a week of dreams come true as 169 Early County High School seniors and 27 Southwest Georgia Academy seniors turned the tassels on their mortar boards and began the rest of their lives.

LOCAL businessman Lou Varon, owner of Dana’s Undies, donated awards of $1,000 each to eighteen ECSS teachers.

INCUMBENT U. S. Rep. Sanford Bishop was in Early County this week, speaking to a group of supporters at a political luncheon sponsored by Bill Stone. Guests enjoyed barbecue, Brunswick stew and iced tea.

BLAKELY Mayor A.J. Gentry cut the ribbon at Speedee Cash in Sawyer Shopping Center.

MELBA King Kilburn, native of Blakely, was visiting here from California and signed copies of her book, Mrs. Preacher, at the local library.

50 YEARS AGO

June 10, 1971

AS part of the “Keep America Beautiful” and the “Stay and See Early County” programs, County Agent Charles Robertson directed the planting of grass at the new Early County Health Center on Flower’s Drive.

An office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will be established in Early County at the Courthouse.

WINSTON Chandler, a former Highway Patrolman, has been promoted to the GBI and will be in charge of the Early County office.

EDDIE Martin was installed as President of the Jaycees at the annual Awards banquet at the V. F. W.

MRS. Felix Davis III was installed as President of the Jaycettes. Albert Newberry accepted the Distinguished Service Award on behalf of W.B.B.K. Radio.

ATTENDING Girls’ State this week at the University of Georgia are Donna Johnson, Pam Collins, Mary Clinkscales, Gail Jones, Jane Knighton and Sylvia Hollinhead. Attending Boys’ State at Woodward Academy are Jimmy Ray Loyless, Mac Enfinger, James Cannon, Bill Love, Tony Gilbert and Ricky Hewitt.

75 YEARS

June 13, 1946

MRS. Brewer entertained the Jack and Jill Kindergarten with a swimming party and picnic. Receiving their diplomas were Glyndell Thompson, Brenda Scarborough, Joyce Williams, Emylee Houston, Jack Howell, Jimmy Rice, Warren Baxley, Jr., and Jimmy Brewer.

HUNGRY baseball fans will get their appetites appeased this summer as Blakely has entered the newly-formed Flint River League. Jack White will act as manager.

MISS Frances Helen Garrett and Mr. F. B. Chandler were united in marriage at the home of Rev. Charles Allen in Arlington in a quiet evening ceremony June 7th.

MR. and Mrs. Herman Clark announce the birth of a daughter, Judith Anne, June 5th at the the local hospital.

MISS Martha Gene George, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester George, became the bride of Walter Garland Middleton Sunday morning at 9 o’clock at the Blakely Baptist Church.

100 YEARS

June 9, 1921

MISSES Annalene Felder and Gussie Chancy have reached home from the State Normal School in Athens, Miss Chancy being one of the 1921 graduates of that school.

GEORGE Alto Warrick is the name of the young man who arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alto Warrick Sunday.

CITY Council has purchased an American-LaFrance motor-driven fire engine.

THE remains of Burtchael Odom, Early County young man killed in France during the war, were brought back and interred at Rock Hill Cemetery.

125 YEARS

June 11, 1896

DURING the storm last Wednesday evening a cedar tree in the yard of Mr. D.D. Strong was shattered.

MISSES Lessie Powers and Georgia Glenn of Columbia spent Saturday in Blakely.
