Gordon: A bullet dodged!

Southwest Georgia’s attention was diverted from the holiday weekend to tropical storm Gordon which made its way across south Florida into the Gulf of Mexico late Monday.

The projected track of the fast moving storm, packing sustained winds of 65 miles per hour, has triggered warnings from Destin in the Florida Panhandle to Texas.

The initial concern in Southwest Georgia was the impact heavy rains from the storm could have on the area’s peanut and cotton crops which have already been soaked by rainfall over the past several weeks.

However, rain forecast for Southwest Georgia has been reduced to scattered storms ending by 7 p.m.

The relative small storm, travelling WNW at 15 mph with sustained winds of 65 mph is projected to make landfall near Biloxi, Miss. shortly after midnight Tuesday.
