County for 159 of those years!

Just in time for Early County’s bicentennial celebration, the earliest issues of the Early County News are now available online, starting with the the Nov. 4, 1863, issue. The News was established in 1859.

“Newspapers remain the number one most frequently requested digital primary source format in Georgia’s public libraries,” says HomePLACE Director Angela Stanley. “We tend to think of Facebook as our virtual community meeting place, but newspapers have been filling this role since the 17th century.”

Georgia Historic Newspapers, which includes some of the state’s earliest newspapers providing perspectives often missing in history books, is compatible with all current browsers, and the newspaper page images can be viewed without the use of plug-ins or additional software downloads. They can also be downloaded as PDFs.
