Crack down on illegal dumping

The city is in the process of cracking down on illegal dumping like that exposed in the photos taken on Copperhead Lane in Blakely.

The Blakely City Code states, “...it is unlawful for any person to dump or dispose of any refuse on any lot, public street, alley or roadway within the city...”

The code provides fines for first offenses of “not less than $100 or more than $1,000, up to 30 days imprisonment, or both. Each day the violation continues shall constitute a separate offense.”

For additional offenses the code provides... “The violator shall be guilty of a misdemeanor of high and aggravated nature punishable by a fine of not less than $750 or more than $1,000, or up to 60 days imprisonment, or both.”

The court may also order violators to repair or restore property damaged, or pay damages resulting from such violations or perform public service...”

The city is offering a reward for information leading to the person responsible for illegal dumping. Call 911 or 723-5500 to report illegal dumping.
