George Davis

Retired

George “Scaper” Lowell Davis, 75, of Albany, Ga., passed away Thursday, June 21, 2018, at the Pruitthealth/Palmyra Nursing Home.

Mr. Davis was born Aug. 15, 1942, in Blakely, Ga., to the late George Auburn “Byrd” Davis and Mary Etteen Temples Davis. He was a former carpenter in construction having worked for the Austin Bridge Co. of Louisiana before moving to Albany in 1973. He worked at Georgia-Pacific, DCSS and retired from the Gray Communication/ Albany Herald circulation department.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Davis Sims; and three brothers, Buck Davis, Billy Davis and Tony Davis.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Lynn Haydel of Ponchatoula, La.; four sisters, Peggy Willoughby of Dothan, Ala., Loretta Alexander of Albany, Betty Sue Varnum of Port Saint Joe, Fla., and Barbara Jean Barron and John of Blakely; one brother, Jimmy Davis and Alie of Canton, Ga.; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at 11 a.m. in the Pickle Cemetery. The family received friends and family members for a visitation at 9:30 a.m. and then went to the cemetery for the service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Sterling Jones and Larry Hample from Albany Rescue Mission officiating the service.

Pallbearers were Earl Conley, Ned Taylor, Robert Alexander and Thomas Alexander.

Manry-Jordan- Hodges Funeral Home were in charge of arrangements.
