Bush assumes command of Navy’s USS Little Rock

The USS Little Rock is a fast 380-ft. U.S. Navy Freedom-class littoral combat ship (LCS) capable of being equipped to carry out a variety of missions.

CDR Bush is the son of Charles Oliver Bush of Colquitt and Johnnie Mae Bush of Jakin. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January 1989 as an Air Traffic Controller serving 10 years before receiving his commission through the Enlisted Commissioning Program NROTC at North Carolina State University in May 1999.

The first tour of his 29-year career was onboard the USS Roosevelt (DDG 80), where he served as the Communications Officer from March 2000 to November 2001. There, he qualified as a Surface Warfare Officer.

From November 2001 through June 2003, he was attached to Commander Destroyer Squadron 24 as assistant Operations Officer deploying to the Mediterranean Sea onboard USS Spruance.

His first assignment ashore was as an instructor at the Surface Warfare Officer center of excellence in Newport, Rhode Island. While at SWOS, he earned a Master’s of Science degree in Human Resource Management from the University of Rhode Island graduating summa cum laude. After SWOS, he completed SWO Department Head School graduating with distinction.

His first department head assignment was a three-year tour onboard USS Carney (DDG 64) as the Weapons and Combat Systems Officer deploying to the Persian Gulf twice as part of the Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower Strike Group.

While there, the USS Carney earned numerous awards including the Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Fund award and two Battle Effectiveness Awards.

CDR Bush attended the Army Junior War College in May 2010, where he completed his Joint Professional Military Education. He reported to NAVPERSCOM in Millington, Tenn. in July 2011 as the Support Junior Surface Warfare Detailer. While there, he was screened for Surface Commander Command afloat.

From September 2012 to July 2015 he served as the URL Reserve Officer Community Manager and Reserve Deputy for BUPERS-318.

Commander Bush served as Executive Officer of the Little Rock Gold Crew before assuming command in April.

During his career Navy service he has received the Navy/Marine Corps Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal (4), Navy Achievement Medal (3), good conduct medal (3), and various unit and campaign ribbons.
