County to adopt budget June 14

Monday’s Early County Board of Commissioners’ monthly meeting was a routine business meeting consisting mostly of board appointments and annual contract renewals.

Meredith Moseley Whitehead was appointed to the Board of Assessors to serve the unexpired term of Jay Palmer who resigned from the board last month. The term expires Dec. 31, 2020.

Dewana Fields was appointed to serve a five-year term on the Department of Family and Children Services board. She will be replacing Beauty Smith.

Robert Chester was reappointed to the Southwest Georgia Community Action Council.

The board renewed a lease contract with Blakely Pharmacy, LLC for access to the drive thru window at $100 per year.

Renewal of the annual $25,000 contract with the Chamber of Commerce was approved. The contract provides for services and provision of an economic development office and support.

The board renewed a contract for services with the Pataula Center for Children which provides for $5,000 in county funds to assist the centers operations.

The board also renewed a lease agreement with Mrs. Max Holman which provides for the county to lease a tract of land at the intersection of Josh and Fryer Roads at $1.00 per year for a solid collection site.

The ccommissioners held called board meetings May 14 and 21 in addition to the May 7 regular meeting. A number of personnel issues were acted on at those meetings.

At the May 14 meeting the commissioners approved $1,000 for the Arlington Senior Center for Early County residents; $2,500 for utilities for Arlington Recreation Center for Early County residents using the gym; and a $2,500 increase in funding for the Blakely- Early County Recreation Department.

At the May 22 meeting the commissioners set the rent for the paint hanger at the airport at $1,000 per month; and approved the purchase of 24 acres by the airport at $6,500 per acre.

Budget Meetings

The county has held a series of budget meetings May 7, 14, 21 and June 4. Another budget meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. June 14. The proposed budget is scheduled to be adopted at 6 p.m. June 14.
