Murder charged in toddler’s death


Charles McGhee Charles McGhee The News has learned the GBI has arrested and filed charges against a Blakely man in connection with the Dec. 21, 2017, drowning death of 23 month-old Kylen Smith.

Early County investigators responded to a call in reference to an unresponsive two year old found in a bathtub on Weaver Street in Blakely. The child was taken to Pioneer Community Hospital in Blakely where he was pronounced dead. The youth was reportedly in the care of his mother’s boyfriend when he was found unresponsive in a bathtub.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested to assist with the case. An autopsy was conducted at the GBI Crime Lab in Macon. The child was found to have died from asphyxiation due to drowning and blunt force trauma.

Charles McGhee, 30 was arrested April 25 for murder and cruelty to children in the first degree. McGhee was with the child at the time of the incident and had called 911. McGhee is presently in the Early County Jail.

Meth charges

A Blakely man was arrested Monday in connection with drugs found in the vehicle in which he was a passenger during a traffic stop in Hilton.

Early County Investigators had previously been contacted by Houston County, Alabama investigators advising of a Failure to Appear warrant for Cecil Cook Jr., 52, of Old Columbia Rd. in Blakely stemming from a drug charge.

Conducting surveillance in the Hilton area, Early County investigators observed Cook in a car coming from Alabama. The car was stopped, and Cook was taken into custody. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, a quantity of methamphetamine was found along with evidence linking Cook to the drugs.

Cook was charged with one count of Possession of a Controlled Substance-Methamphetamine and booked into the Early County Jail. A hold was also placed for Houston County concerning the outstanding warrant from Alabama.
