Unsung Heroes: Freddie Summerset, left, and Pastor Eddie Stapleton were honored at Freedom Council banquet. The Freedom Council honored two local “Unsung Heroes” at their 14th Annual Unsung Hero Banquet Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, at the Blakely Civic Center.

Larry “Gator” Rivers, a former member of the legendary Globetrotters, energetically and passionately served as both the keynote speaker and entertainment for the event. Youth and adults from Blakely and surrounding counties were able to interact with Mr. Rivers through ball tricks, autographs and pictures. His presence and interaction is a memory that all in attendance will cherish.

Community Unsung Heroes honored at the banquet for their unique contributions to the community included Pastor Eddie Stapleton and Freddie Summerset.

Congressman Sanford Bishop’s representative, Kenneth Cutts, presented each honoree with a “Certificate of Congressional Recognition” signed by the Congressman and the Freedom Council presented their awards.

Both Stapleton and Summerset were recognized for their unrewarded efforts without monetary gain to make Blakely a better place. Pastor Stapleton was recognized for expanding his ministry beyond the pulpit and taking it to the streets to save our youth through relationship building and mentorship.

Mr. Summerset was recognized for his efforts in organizing and hosting events that benefit families in need in the community. He was also recognized for continuously serving as an unfailing source of consolation to bereaved families through his unique angelic voice. Stapleton and Summerset both gave encouraging words of gratitude after the awards ceremony.

The Freedom Council expressed thanks to everyone who attended and those who helped make the banquet possible. Special thanks to Larry “Gator” Rivers of Savannah, Ga., Congressman Sanford Bishop and staff, Mayor Anthony Howard, DeLois Jones (decorator), Mary George (caterer), the City of Blakely, the Early County News and all sponsors.
