Deborah Barnes inducted into Alabama Independent School Association HOF


Deborah Barnes Deborah Barnes Bluffton native Deborah Barnes was recently inducted into the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) Hall of Fame.

Deborah, a 1980 graduate of Abbeville Christian Academy in Abbeville, Ala., is the daughter of Jack and Lorraine Durham of Bluffton. She played basketball and softball and was salutatorian of her class.

She played basketball at Wallace College in Dothan and was MVP of the 1982 AJCC All Star game.

She continued her basketball career as a member of the Auburn Lady Tigers basketball team and graduated in 1985 with a B.S. degree in secondary education in history and physical education. She earned a M.S. degree in history at Troy State-Dothan in 1995.

She returned to Abbeville Christian where she taught history, Bible, music and physical education and coached girls basketball and softball, leading the ACA girls to a state championship in 1988. She also coached the Wallace College Lady Governors for three years.

Deborah and her husband of 33 years, Keith Barnes, live near Headland. She has been organist at First Baptist Church of Abbeville for 31 years. Keith and Deborah have three daughters — Jessica, 29, and twins Sarah and Lauren, 21, seniors at Auburn and Troy University-Dothan.
