Spelling bee winners announced at SGA


Bonnie Jean Houston and Ethan Ragan were first and second place winners, respectively, in the 2018 spelling bee at SGA. Southwest Georgia Academy held its annual Scripps National Middle School Spelling Bee competition, Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Bonnie Jean Houston, daughter of Steve and Ramona Houston, won first place. She is in the sixth grade. Second place winner was Ethan Ragan, son of Randy and Stacie Ragan. Ethan is in the eighth grade. These two students will compete in the second round of the GISA Scripps Spelling Bee on February 8th at the Deerfield Windsor Media Center.

Other contestants were fourth graders Emmett Payne and Janna Sheffield; fifth graders Brack Jarrett and Grant Fletcher; sixth grader Emma Holloman; seventh graders Maggie Benton and Anna Myles Mosely; and eighth grader Caroline Harper.

Jan Calhoun and Brenda Bell were coordinators of the event; Becky Gordon was the pronouncer; and judges were Brenda Bell, Daniel Duebelt and Lynn Murkerson. Henrinel Middleton served as the official scorekeeper of the spelling bee. Jan Calhoun will take the contestants to Deerfield- Windsor for the next round.

After completion of the spelling bee, the contestants and their families were invited to a reception given by the Junior Beta Club, which sponsors the spelling bee.
