Bluffton begins work on veterans memorial

Weston C. Lee Veterans Memorial Park

1LT Weston Lee 1LT Weston Lee The News has learned that the City of Bluffton has received enough contributions to proceed with the purchase of equipment for the Weston C. Lee Veterans Memorial Park.

The mayor and council issued a proclamation in May to name the Bluffton city park the Weston C. Lee Veterans Memorial Park, in honor of 1Lt. Weston C. Lee, who was killed in action April 29 in Mosul, Iraq and in memory of all veterans of the community.

The City of Bluffton park committee, consisting of Denise Hattaway, Gail Hubbard, Freddie Odom, Carolyn Stout and Meghan Williams, set out to raise funds to restore the park’s playground, including replacing outdated equipment.

The committee also has plans for an outdoor fitness area for adults, as physical fitness was a key component of Lee’s life as it is for so many other military personnel.

The park restoration and new equipment for Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the project will cost an estimated $53,500. Donations are still being accepted for Phase 3 efforts which will include signage, picnic tables and benches, a covered area, landscaping and other improvements.

There is approximately another $15,000 in other improvements, including signage, lighting, seating and a pavilion/covered area planned to follow the original restoration.

The committee and the City of Bluffton appreciate any donation to the restoration, expansion and maintenance of this park. Any honorariums or memorial gifts may be mailed directly to: Attention: Weston C. Lee Veterans Memorial Park, City of Bluffton, P.O. Box 55, Bluffton, GA 39824.
