The Alabama Association of School Boards honored Ozark City Schools Board Member James Harris as one of its 2017 All- State School Board members during the association’s annual convention. More than 500 school board members and education leaders attended the event held in Birmingham Dec. 7-9.

AASB began its All- State School Board Member Recognition Program in 1992 to recognize up to five of Alabama’s most outstanding past or present school board members. The award is the highest honor AASB bestows. “James has demonstrated exemplary boardsmanship and the highest ideals of board service,” said AASB President Pam Doyle. “AASB is proud to bestow upon him its highest honor for school board members.”

Harris, a retired Command Sergeant Major of the United States Army, has been a member of the Ozark City school board since 2008. He has reached the masters honor roll level in AASB’s School Board Member Academy, earning 273.5 training hours over the course of his tenure as a school board member.

Those who nominated Harris for the All-State School Board Member award describe him as well known and respected in the community for his systematic and thoughtful approach to advocating for schoolchildren.

“The Ozark City School System is a better place for students because of Mr. Harris’ leadership,” said Ozark City Schools Superintenden Rick McInturf. It’s difficult to even put into words the influence he has had on the school system.”

Ozark City Mayor Bob Bunting called Harris the “most dedicated school board member that has ever served the Ozark City School System” and credits Harris for the active role he played in the construction of the school system’s new high school.

Other winners of AASB’s 2017 All-State School Board Member awards include Dr. Lonnie Burnett (Saraland City Schools), Russell Johnson (Athens City Schools), Marvin Lucas (Tuscaloosa City Schools) and Linda Robbins (Satsuma City Schools).

The All-State School Board Member awards program is a highlight of the AASB Annual Convention.
