About those Bobcats

Billy Fleming

An earlier rumor that the Dothan Tigers and Bobcats may be considering renewing their “rivalry” ceased when the Bobcats’ 2017 schedule began circulating.

The Bobcats kickoff their season hosting the Eufaula Tigers Aug. 25. They will wrap up the regular season hosting Dothan High Nov. 3 at Standifer Field.

About the rivalry thing...

I guess 96 years might be a little long to be talking about revenge. But, it was 96 years ago when the first Bobcat team traveled to Dothan High to play their first football game — they lost 47-0. Eufaula defeated the Bobcats 38-0 in their second game.

Wrapping up the regular season with “bookend” wins is a worthy goal. And, it would please some special fans — those first Bobcats — who will be watching from over the stands.

You can bet Bill Boyett will proudly be watching and enjoying his grandson — Brad Boyett, the “Voice of the Bobcats!”

Another of those original Bobcats, one who has recounted that first game dozens of time as we passed by the stadium in Dothan, will be Hoyle Fleming, who scored the Bobcats’ first touchdown that first season in 1921.

There will probably be a few of those old Tigers watching, too, including Johnny Mac Brown who ripped the Bobcats that first game and went on to football fame at Alabama and cowboy fame in Hollywood.
