Eight students had the opportunity to visit Lewis M. Carter Manufacturing in Donalsonville, Ga., Sept. 15.

These students were chosen through a selection process at the request of LMC to identify student mentees who may allow the company to grow their future workforce. Students were educated about the importance of having effective employability skills in the workplace.

This topic reinforces Course Standard 1 that is taught in all Career, Technical and Agricultural Education classes. Georgia CTAE is placing an emphasis on teaching soft skills to students after conversations with business and industry representatives that revealed many new employees lack appropriate work ethics.

During the visit, Production Planner Leighton Brookins and Production Manager Will Grimes made a presentation to the students that is delivered to all first-time hires at LMC. The presentation included information about the importance of correctly completing tax forms, attendance, respectful interactions with co-workers, work ethics, and workplace conduct.

Afterwards, the group was joined by owner Marcus Carter III for a Q & A session. Students had the opportunity to ask questions about what will make them stand out to future employers as well as what their next steps should be towards meeting their future career goals.

LMC representatives also stressed the importance of appropriate dress, post-secondary education and training, as well as gaining onthe job experience through volunteering, job shadowing, co-ops, and internships. Job shadowing opportunities will be offered to each of the student mentees in their career field of choice through ECHS Work-Based Learning in the spring.
