Lewis celebrates 70th birthday

Larry Lewis Larry Lewis Dr. Larry “Doby” Lewis celebrated his 70th birthday Saturday, May 3, 2014, at Church Street Church of Christ.

Larry was roasted by family and friends. All who spoke remembered a few things about Larry.

Many who knew him as a little boy growing up on Ross Avenue (now Martin Luther King), Church Street and Willis Cain Homes remembered that he cried everyday from his house to the school when he was in the first grade.

Many remembered that he didn’t like working in the cotton/peanut fields, but that he was very smart in his books. Larry was valedictorian of the Class of 1961 at Washington High School in Blakely. He earned a B.S. degree from Alabama State University graduating magna cum laude in 1995. He earned a M.S. degree from Perdue University in the 1970s and a doctorate degree from Utah State in Logan, Utah.

Larry was remembered for his love of travel. He has driven through every state in the United States. In 1991 he drove the east coast, 23 states. In 1992 he drove the west coast, 25 states, visiting all the points of interest. He has been to Hawaii and Alaska as well as to Canada twice and London, England, in 1988.

Last, but not least, Larry was remembered for his love of the Lord and his family. He has been a member of the Church of Christ for 58 years. Even though he is ill now and living in an assisted living facility, he goes to every service and participates in church activities. He calls and visits with his family every week.

Larry’s sisters, Beauty Smith and Betty Henderson, and his brother, Dara Lewis Sr., would like to thank Larry’s childhood friends, high school classmates, college classmates, relatives, church family and Minister Bro. James E. Scurlark, Omega Psi Phi brothers, his friend Andrew Echols for donating the programs, and all who traveled to Blakely to help celebrate his 70th birthday.
