Williams signs with Bengals

Shawn Williams Shawn Williams Former ECHS Bobcat standout Shawn Williams, ranked as the No. 3 strong safety in the nation, was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round in the recent NFL football draft.

The Bengals announced last week they had reached an agreement with Williams, a safety from the University of Georgia and 2009 graduate of Early County High.

Williams, a strong safety for the Bulldogs, made 98 tackles during his senior season in 2012. He gained a reputation as one of the SEC’s better safeties and was a solid defender against the run.

Following the Bulldogs’ 32-28 loss to eventual national champion Alabama in the SEC Championship and 45-31 win over Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl, Williams joined outstanding seniors from across the nation in Senior Bowl in Mobile.

Williams and Tay Cody are the only former Bobcats who have played in the Senior Bowl.

Williams, the son of Joe and Charlene Williams of Damascus, was a leader on the Bulldogs’ defense for four seasons, at safety and linebacker.
