Runoff election held Tuesday

Voters were still casting votes in the City of Blakely runoff election for mayor when the News went to press late Tuesday afternoon.

Challenger Anthony Howard went into the runoff with a hefty lead after taking over 40 percent of the votes in the Nov. 8 city election.

Howard received 621 votes to incumbent mayor Ric Hall’s 370 votes. James McCoy received 295 votes and Tracy Robinson 240.

Both candidates have campaigned vigorously over the past four weeks launching attacks rarely seen in the community’s local elections.

When advance voting ended Friday 471 had cast early ballots. As of 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, with an hour and 45 minutes remaining before the polls closed, 340 absentee ballots had been received and 566 voters had cast ballots at the polls.
