Damascus council members appointed, two seats still open
Nathaniel Thompson, acting mayor for the City of Damascus has appointed two council members to fill vacancies on the council in the wake of last month’s resignations.
Former Damascus mayor Johnny Phillips and former councilperson Phyllis Craft were sworn in Thursday. Thompson and the two new council members will appoint two additional council members at the Aug. 17 council meeting.
Three council members — Bridget Wells, Gwen Shuler and Tanya Williams-Sol — and mayor Vivian Pounder resigned last month leaving then mayor pro tem Thompson the only elected official remaining.
Following the resignation, and in accordance with the city’s charter, Thompson was responsible for appointing two council members. The three of them are responsible for appointing a fourth member. The new council would then choose one of the four members as mayor and appoint a fifth person to fill out the council.
The city tried to hold an election several months ago, but nobody qualified. Seven people have been appointed to the council over the past 16 months, but have all subsequently resigned.
