Blakely and Damascus were among the recipients of Community Development Block Grants announced last week by Governor Sonny Perdue.

The grants were among nearly $37 million in federal grants from the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development administered by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.

"The Community Development Block Grant program provides an essential financial resource to Georgia's smaller communities in their efforts to fund projects that will assist low and moderate-income citizens," said Governor Perdue.

The City of Blakely will receive a $500,000 grant for the construction of a new Head Start Facility located on Freeman Road. The City of Damascus, will receive a $396,057 grant for water system improvements.

The existing Head Start building underwent renovation last year to abate a health hazard caused by mold. The city and county each pledged $10,000 in matching funds when application for the grant was submitted in January.

Other area communities receiving grants include: the City of Colquitt, $703,378 for a multi activity program; the City of Donalsonville, $500,000 for water improvements; and Randolph County, $465,049 for drainage and street improvements.
