July 28, 1999

THE BELLS will ring early this Friday as more than 2,800 school children return to the classrooms in Early County.

THE RACE for the Early County Board of Commissioners District 3 officially began Monday morning when two men qualified for the Sept. 21 special election. Kevin Dean was the first to qualify at the Probate Judge's office, followed by Blakely native Chan Benton.

Aug. 2, 1984

TUESDAY is election day in Blakely as city voters take to the polls to elect a new mayor and two city councilmen. Incumbent Mayor Billy Fleming is not seeking re-election, but incumbent councilmen Tommy Wright and Lester Shoemaker are.

THE PILOT Club of Blakely held their dinner meeting at the Baptist Branch Homes, Tuesday evening, with Mrs. Marie Wilkerson, president, presiding.

Aug. 13, 1959

PUNCH Gilbert and Cecil Hall, coaches of the Yankees, winners of the Little League pennant, entertained members of the team last Thursday with a swimming party and hamburger supper at Kolomoki State Park. Members of the team present were Tommy Gilbert, Jimmy Hall, Billy Fleming, Jimmy Benton, Sonny King, Sambo Clinkscales, Benny Clenny, Richard Shoemaker, Robert Sheffield, Johnny Chandler and Wayne Knighton. Other members of the team not present were Butch Moore, Spears Westbrook, Benny Chandler and Steve Culpepper.

EARLY COUNTY 4-H Club members brought home seven first place district winners from the Southwest District Project Achievement Meeting last week. These are: Alice Jean Middleton, senior dress revue; Marilyn Waller, senior frozen foods; Dorothy Phelps, junior dress revue; Dan Blackshear, senior poultry; Charles Perry, senior garden; Earl Middleton, junior garden; Eddie Pullen, junior between meal snacks.

EARLY COUNTY Schools will open for the Fall Term on Monday, Aug. 31, 1959, according to an announcement made today by Miss Annie Moore Grier, County School Superintendent.

75 YEARS AGO

Aug. 9, 1934

THE LOCAL cotton ginners are busy, a number of bales have been ginned up to Wednesday afternoon.

MISSES Amelia Hobbs, Dorothy Slappey, Marie Smith, Genevieve Martin and Mr. Freeman Hall are attending the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago this week.

MR. H.A. Walton returned Tuesday from a business trip to Atlanta.

CHARLES E. Tarver has been appointed as assistant in Cotton Adjustment and has been assigned to work in this county.

PETE Underwood, of Atlanta, is at home on a visit to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Underwood.

Aug. 13, 1909

SO HEAVY has been the passenger service on the Atlanta and St. Andrews Bay Railroad that orders for additional cars have been made.

THE TRI-County Medical Society held a barbeque in Arlington on last Friday.

MR. D.W. Harrell brought some fine sweet potatoes to market last Friday.

MR. AND Mrs. C.L. Glessner and litttle niece, Miss Marie Alderman, have returned from St. Andrews Bay.

Aug. 7, 1884

HENDERSON Bros. have had their store house painted and it is an ornament to the south side of town.

MR. CHAS Robinson went to Columbus on last Sunday's boat and returned Wednesday.

OUR MR. J.A. Fleming left, per boat, on last Sunday to take charge of The Fort Gaines Tribune.

DR. J.F. Shackleford, of Columbus, was a visitor to Blakely last week.
