School board honored
The five school board members of the Early County School System are in the spotlight March 9-13, along with their 1,100 counterparts throughout the state, during the 2009 School Board Appreciation Week in Georgia.
The week's theme, "School boards: The voice and vision for public schools," focuses attention both on the importance of board service and the board's responsibilities to ensure a well-rounded education for children in its public schools.
"Board members represent their neighbors as the voice for public schools, both in this community and with their fellow elected representatives," said superintendent Kenneth Hall. "This year, in particular, they are facing tremendous challenges because of the economy and funding increasing cutbacks which directly impact students, staff and services. At the same time, they must think ahead as we plan for future needs, such as buildings, instructional programs and personnel."
"Early County Board decisions affect some 2400 students, 428 employees, four schools and a total annual budget of $28,133,360 (from chart of accounts/total all funds 2009)."
Early County Board of Education Chairman, William Davis, employed by First State Bank of Blakely, has served on the Early County Board of Education since January 2005. James Cannon, employed by Damascus Peanut Company, and Alice Hutchins have served on the Early County Board of Education since January 2007. Cynthia Levatte, employed by the Dougherty County Board of Education, and Denise Williams are newly elected board members. Levatte and Williams began their terms January 2009.
