TV going digital!!!

The FCC has been trying to hammer the message home for over a year. But, it's now time to take notice — television is going digital.

Begining Feb. 17, 2009, — about five months from now — all full-power TV stations will broadcast only digital signals — providing better picture and sound quality and more programming.

People who receive analog broadcasts will need to make some changes by then to continue to receive the free programming.

Everyone watching analog TV will have several choices: (1) connect to cable or satellite service, (2) buy a television with a digital tuner or (3) purchase a converter box at a cost of $50 to $70 to keep their analog televisions working.

Converter boxes

Consumers can get help buying a converter box from the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration, which has a coupon program. Coupons are worth $40 each. Every household can receive two coupons.

To use the coupon, consumers must purchase converters certified by the NTIA at participating stores. The converters are available in Blakely at Sears and RadioShack and at A-1 Satellite Center in Donalsonville.

The NTIA will accept applications until Mar. 31, 2009. Coupon applications are available at www.dtv2009.gov or through calling the 24-hour hotline at 1-888-388-2009.
