School officials facing more state funding cuts

Early County School System officials learned this week that the system will be facing additional cuts in state funding. The Governor's Office of Planning and Budget has announced that K-12 educational grants will be reduced two percent this fiscal year and an additional three percent for FY 2010.

Programs named by the state for reduction include equalization, preschool handicapped, pupil transportation, QBE, school nurses and tuition for the multi-handicapped. A 2.5 percent pay increase mandated by the state but not fully state-funded will not be impacted by the new austerity cuts.

Locally, ECSS estimates an additional $259,000 funding cut in addition to the $150,000 already announced for the term, bringing the total to a $409,000 funding cut for the year.

Even with the new funding cuts, the Early County School Board is sticking with its current plan to increase millage by 1.5 mills, a three percent increase for local property owners. The board expects to set the millage rate at a called meeting Aug. 19, 9 a.m., at the middle school.

The school board should learn to cut back just like the property owners in Early County. The school board should not be able to just spend what they want. We need more serious minded board members
