Voters meet the candidates

The Early County Courtroom was standing room only Monday night as candidates for local office appeared at a forum to introduce themselves and their campaigns to local voters. Nine of the 10 candidates in four contested races participated in the forum.

Each candidate had the opportunity to make an introduction to the audience before fielding questions presented by chamber president Hilary Halford, Early County News publisher Billy Fleming and Primary Care financial officer Edwin James. Lisa Collins, EC2055, moderated the forum.

The candidates who participated in the forum were Sheriff candidates, Donald Bryant, Ray Enfinger and incumbent Jimmie Murkerson; Tax Commissioner candidates, incumbent Sylvia Hood and Jerry Howard; Commission District 2 candidates, incumbent Hank Jester and Vivian Pounder; and Coroner candidates, Todd T. Hunter and Bertha Mosely-O'Neal. Coroner candidate Nikia N. Henderson did not participate in the forum.

The questions asked of the candidates were not intended to stir debate between the candidates, but to allow voters to hear first-hand the candidates' views on issues pertaining to their respective office.

State Representative Gerald Greene, who is unopposed, also participated in the forum.

The Early County News, Blakely-Early Chamber of Commerce and Early County 2055 sponsored the forum. Another forum is planned for October to present candidates of non-partisan races which include probate judge and school board seats.
