BLAKELY native James David Martin, son of Lynwood and Gloria Martin, received a master of science degree in inorganic chemistry May 1. MONIQUE Moses and Leah Hudson will represent Georgia in the Chapter Showcase display event. MRS. KAY Lee of Leary and Mr. Edgar Gilbert of Blakely announce the engagement of their daughter, Sherri Kay, to Brian Lee Cresswell of Blakely. 25 YEARS AGO June 30, 1983 THE FORT Gaines Lions Club will be sponsoring the annual Independence Day Festival across from the Corp of Engineers' office on Hwy 39 north. SHEILA Elizabeth Hatcher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Hatcher of Blakely, and a graduate of Early County High School, has earned academic honors at LaGrange College for the spring semester by being named to the dean's list. THERE WILL be a men's slow pitch softball tournament at Northview Park in Blakely July 15 and 16, and a women's slow pitch softball tournament at the park July 8 and 9. SIXTEEN Early County 4-H' ers recently competed in the Southwest Junior- Senior District Project Achievement held at Rock Eagle. MRS. JACKIE Maddox presented the first Lonnie B. Chester Memorial Scholarship to Laura Lynn Davis. 50 YEARS AGO June 18, 1958 THERE WILL BE "big doings" at the clubhouse of the Veterans of Foreign Wars all day July 4, Commander Bruce Middleton has announced. MR. AND Mrs. Billy Roberts announce the birth of a son, William Timothy, Friday, June 27, Baxley Clinic. FRIENDS OF Mrs. B.R. Collins will be interested to know that she is attending summer school at Shorter College, Rome. PHIL HOWARD has joined the U.S. Air Force and left Sunday for San Antonio, Texas. MISSES MERLYN and Sterlyn Davis have returned from a visit to their sister, Mrs. Henry Perry, in Fort Lauderdale. PRISCILLA Marshall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Marshall, will be among the 450 teenage delegates to the 1958 national meeting of the Future Homemakers of America, July 7-11 in Kansas City, Mo. DR. JAMES H. Crowdis, well-known Blakely physician, became the 33rd president of the Blakely Rotary Club when he assumed the duties of the office at the close of last Friday's weekly meeting. He succeeded Andrew J. Singletary. FRIENDS will be interested to know that Mrs. Ed Minter is undergoing treatment in Holland Hospital. 75 YEARS AGO June 29, 1933 THE BLAKELY Rotary Club celebrated its seventh birthday this past week. MESSRS. W.C. Jordan, Shelly Simmons, Otis Bridges and Jack Harris attended the state convention of the American Legion held in Valdosta Tuesday. JOE VINSON and Billy Hall have returned from Panama City, where they camped last week. EDITORIALLY THE News said: Cotton soared above 10 cents in a spectacular rise Monday. It is generally conceded that the recent advances have been due to the government program calling for plowing up of at least 25 percent of the 1933 crop, and not prompt to any great degree by increasing demand, although the demand was up considerably by May. 100 YEARS AGO June 20, 1908 MR. T.G. Harvey Jr., of Jakin, and Miss Florah Ender, of Blakely, opened up the New Hope School last Monday. THE COTTON mill soliciting committee appointed at the meeting held last Monday night includes Messrs. C.E. Boyett, T.R. McDonald, C.M. Deal, T.B. McDowell, J.H. Flowers, D.W. James and John Underwood. MR. J.H. COACHMAN has bought the Dr. Brock residence on Flowers Drive. THE HOUSE occupied by Mr. Dan Darley, near Flowers Mill, was badly burned last Saturday. THE PETITION for the incorporation of the Blakely Realty and Development Company was published in this issue of The News. The petitioners include A.G. Powell, H.G. Smith, W.B. Standifer, W.J. Jennings, W.G. Park, J.O. Bridges, J.H. Butler, J.W. Vinson and W.A. Hall. 125 YEARS AGO July 5, 1883 WATERMELONS and peaches are now coming into the market. Watermelons sell at 20 cents and 25 cents while peaches are at 90 cents per basket. MR. ROBERT Joiner decided last week to "renew his youth like the eagles" and hied himself back to South Carolina and in a few days returned with a handsome, sprightly young wife.
