Make family reunions fun

Family reunions are a great way to reconnect with those relatives you don't see on a regular basis. Part of the fun of these reunions is seeing how everyone has changed from year to year and enjoying some recreation and good food.

Even though the companionship of family could be entertainment enough, those planning family reunions should also devise other ways to amuse reunion attendants. Here are family-friendly activities you can try:

1. Baby picture trivia. Have each person send you a baby picture, which you then affix to a giant poster. Reunion attendants get to guess who each person is. The one with the most correct guesses can win a prize.

2. Organize a family scavenger hunt. Everyone gets handed a sheet with incomplete statements, such as, "What was Grandma Mary's maiden name?" Reunion folks will intermingle trying to complete the answers.

3. Hire a caricature artist. He or she can sketch funny pictures of family members. Others will enjoy watching the progress of the artist and gauging accuracy.

4. Design a family mural. Bring a large roll of postal paper or some other heavyweight paper, markers, paints or other "creative" items. Have all reunion participants join in creating a mural of a cohesive theme or freestyle artwork.

5. Play sports. Softball or other team games, such as volleyball or dodgeball, can be organized and work well with large groups of people. You can separate teams in advance or assign everyone a team based on the color T-shirt they are wearing.

6. Build a sandcastle. If the reunion is held at a beach or a park with a lot of sand, hold contests as to what team can create the most elaborate sandcastle.

7. Tug of war. Bring a large nylon rope (25 feet long) and set up opposing teams. See who can get the flag over on their side or make it really interesting (and messy) by holding the tug of war over a puddle.

8. Sack races/egg toss. These activities seem to go hand-in-hand with family reunions.

9. Slide show. If you'll have access to electricity, organize a slide show on your computer of various family moments throughout the year. You can scan in old photographs and intersperse with newer, digital ones. Capture a few pictures during the reunion and add them to the slide show last-minute as a bonus surprise.
