County budget: $7.85 million

The Early County commissioners will hold a public hearing tomorrow at 6 p.m. to hear citizens' comments on the proposed 2008-09 budget.

The proposed price tag for keeping the county operating for another year is $7.85 million, a 10.16 percent increase over the current year's $7.3 million budget for the general fund.

In addition to the general fund, the county also maintains budgets for capital improvement projects - $1.74 million; and E911 -$352,542. The county is responsible for 60 percent of E911 costs not recouped through land and cell phone fees, and the city 40 percent.

Fuel prices are driving up the cost of services with the road department increasing its fuel budget by $20,000 and solid waste management increasing its fuel costs by $45,000.

Departments with vehicles or gas-powered machinery, such as public buildings, tax assessor, code enforcement and emergency management, also budgeted for higher fuel costs.

The county's court system operating costs are increasing by approximately $60,000 with the majority of those increases funding state, superior and juvenile court costs. Court costs include the county's share of costs for public defenders, the district attorney's office and other shared services as well as court reporters, the coroner and state solicitor costs. Some of those costs are recouped through court fees.

The budget also includes a 4 percent raise for the county's 50 full and part-time employees.

A copy of the budget is available for public review at the county admininstration building.
