Candidate forum Monday night

Early County voters are urged to gather at the Early County Courthouse Monday for the 2008 political forum at which they will get a chance to meet the 10 local candidates seeking office in the July General Primary.

The Early County News, which has organized and sponsored past political forums, is being joined this year by the Chamber of Commerce and EC2055 in planning the June 30 forum.

A total of 10 candidates running for sheriff, tax commissioner, coroner and County Commission will be participating in the forum.

Voters and candidates will have an opportunity to meet and greet beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the downstairs lobby of the courthouse.

The forum will begin at 7 p.m. in the courtroom upstairs during which the candidates will introduce themselves to voters and field questions from forum moderators.

There will be additional time to meet and greet the candidates in the lobby following the forum.

Candidates who will be participating include sheriff candidates, Donald Bryant, Ray Enfinger and incumbent Jimmie Murkerson; tax commissioner candidates, incumbent Sylvia Hood and Jerry Howard; coroner candidates, Nikia N. Henderson, Todd T. Hunter and Bertha Mosely- O'Neal; and county commission district two candidates, incumbent Hank Jester and Vivian Pounder.

Incumbent office holders who will return to office unopposed include Clerk of Superior Court India Thompson, Land Surveyor Lodge Holman, County Commission Chairman Richard Ward and District 4 County Commissioner Perry Jarrett and Superior Court Judge Ronnie Joe Lane.

Also returning to serve another term unopposed are State Senator John Bulloch, who was first elected to the State Senate in 2002, and State Representive Gerald Greene of Cuthbert who has been serving in the General Assembly since 1983.

Congressman Sanford Bishop drew no Democratic opposition, but will have a Republican opponent in Lee Ferrell of Albany.

A second forum is being planned in October for candidates who will be on the General Primary ballot.

See pages 16 and 17 in this week's News for General Primary sample ballots. Sample ballots are also available at the Probate Judge's office.
