Golden Peanut debuts organics

Golden Peanut Specialty Products Staff
The Golden Peanut Specialty Products facility in Blakely, headed by George Bates, made their first run of organic peanut flour and organic roasted peanut oil in April.

After many years of talking about organic peanut flour and oil, they finally had a major customer step up to the plate and place an order for organic product.

The Blakely facility was organic-certified two years ago. At that time, the company was receiving a lot of interest in organic samples. Once they received certification, those customers all of a sudden didn't seem very interested. Since that time, the organic market continued to grow and now Golden Peanut is seeing more serious interest again.

The first organic production produced 12 percent fat, dark roasted and 28 percent fat, medium roasted peanut flours and the roasted peanut oil. The first sale was for the organic roasted peanut oil that is going into organic peanut butter. They are also working with the organic oil at several flavor manufacturers who specialize in organic flavors. The organic peanut flour has been sampled to all sorts of business, but it appears that most interest is coming from the confectionary industry.

To produce the organic version, Specialty Products pulled peanuts from the Seagraves, Texas, plant which is an organically-certified sheller.

It was their first experience with Spanish peanuts and the feedback has been very positive so far. It is too early to tell how large of a market the organic line will be, but they are hoping it is something they can run once a quarter or more.
