Early remains in Flint The Early County Commission met June 4 at the County Annex to hold a conference call with Dr. Carol Couch, director of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, to discuss the county's choice of water planning regions. Couch told the commissioners that Early County, like several other counties in the state, is located in two different river basins. But, the water planning regions established by the state's Comprehensive Statewide Water Management Plan are drawn by county lines, requiring Early County to choose either the Chattahoochee or Flint River district. Local concern centered on being included in water use planning in the Chattahoochee River Basin, an important source of industrial and municipal water in the county. According to Couch, the water districts are based on economic development needs and the county should consider if its needs aligned more with the Columbus area or the area served by the Flint River district. She said that nothing in the planning precludes using water from any source in a water district, which assures that Early County's needs from the Chattahoochee River would be recognized regardless of the district. She urged the commission to choose the council that offered the best set of relationships and that offered similar economic development needs. Before moving to a budget work session, the commissioners voted to remain in the Lower Flint - Ochlockonee water planning region. On Monday, June 2 the commissioners held their regular meeting, addressing a short agenda.
They appointed Tommy Davis of Rowena to serve on the Spring Creek Watershed Partnership and approved a change to county's retirement plan that simply changed the plan's language to reflect IRS language.
