Big city gator

This old gator had made his way to Blakely from Silver Lake below Brinson sometime since the early 1980s.
An alligator weighing more than 500 pounds and measuring 11 feet in length was trapped last week in a pond just off Highway 200.

Property owner Bobby Trammel contacted the Department of Natural Resources after he discovered the unwelcome resident in his pond.

The pond is located in a wooded area behind Baptist Branch Homes frequented by kids living in the homes.

The DNR issued a permit for a nuisance alligator and trapper Benny West was called to capture the big gator. Catching the alligator was a challenge, according to West who said the gator bit a chunk out of his boat with his powerful jaws. In the end, however, the gator lost and was transported to an alligator farm in Mitchell County.

A hole in the gator's left back foot web and two scutes missing off the tail leads West to believe the alligator was one of a group tagged during the early 1980s at Silver Lake below Brinson in Miller County.

At the time of the tagging, those gators were three to four feet long.West estimated the gator to be 30 to 35 years old.
