FFA landscapes Habitat house

FFA students cleaned out flower beds, installed plants and layed out pine straw to give the Habitat house its final touch.

Every year the Early County community pulls together its resources and volunteers to build a home for Habitat for Humanity. This year was no exception. An applicant was selected, a home was constructed and a family was able to move into their new living facilities. All that was left were the final touches on the exterior landscape.

Kenneth Hall, Early County Schools superintendent, sought out a special source to accomplish this goal of landscaping the Habitat for Humanity house. Once asked, the Early County FFA jumped at the opportunity to serve its community through this project.

FFA advisor and agriculture teacher, Kitty Simmons, laid out the design and installation plan for the house. The plants used for the landscape were propagated, grown and donated by the agriculture department at Early County High School.

"This was a unique opportunity for students to not only do a community service project, but to also see their plant projects completed full circle," said Simmons.

During the week of May 12-16, both the landscape and ag science classes worked on establishing and cleaning out flower beds, installing plant material and laying out pine straw mulch.

"This was a lot of work for our students. For many, this was their first landscape project. I was very proud of their teamwork," Simmons said.

Early County FFA hopes to make this an annual event by participating in the Habitat for Humanity project. "Part of our motto is 'Living to Serve.' What better way to accomplish this than by participating in community service projects like this," said Simmons.
