SGA honors athletes at annual banquet

Southwest Georgia Academy held its annual Spring sports banquet May 13 in the school cafeteria. Henrinel Middleton was the mistress of ceremonies who introduced the coaches who then recognized their team members.

Coach Rick LaGuardia recognized the tennis team and reviewed their season. He thanked assistant coaches Neil Lowe and Lanie DeLoach for their help.

Coach Tommy Manry recognized the baseball team members who reached the state play-offs this year. He expressed appreciation to assistant coaches Max Evans, Allen Lee, Kenny Wesley, the B-team coach, and Chris Johnson, the JV coach. Manry presented allregion plaques to Chandler Ray, Alex Wilson, Miles Lee and Drew Bridges. Drew Bridges also received an all-state award. Receiving honorable mention allregion certificates were Danny Doster, Blake Lanton, Beau Clenney, Alan Mock, Michael Fincher, Austin Boyd and Taylor Tabb. Manry commented that "success is not always measured by victory" as he expressed his appreciation to the players for their hard work. He also thanked the booster club, parents and fans for their support.

Coach David Bell recognized members of the girls' track team. Only eight girls ran track, but the team placed third in region and several girls qualified for the state meet.

Carl Hobbs, boys' track coach, recognized his 17 team members as he recounted their achievements. This team won first in the region and placed fourth in the state. Each track member who won an event in the region won a plaque for that achievement. Alex Wilson was the high point man in the region meet by winning three events.

Coach Tyler Peck recognized the members of the golf team. Illness, scheduling problems and prior commitments hurt the team effort during the season Coach Peck expressed appreciation to his players, parents and the coaching staff at SGA for their support.

Coach Bell presented special awards and scholarships to several athletes. Blake Shepard and Ashley Tedder received Wendy's High School Scholar- Athlete awards. Scott Widner Scholarships of $250 each were presented to Blake Shepard and Lindsay Buckhalter. The scholarships are presented each year by the Widner family in memory of Scott. The First State Bank of Blakely presented a $500 scholarship to Jason Dean for his outstanding academic ability and athletic participation. The Bank of Early presented a $500 scholarship to Kayla Craft for outstanding academic and athletic achievement. These bank scholarships are presented annually.

Donna Bundrick, outgoing booster club president, expressed her appreciation to the coaches, parents, faculty and administration for their support during her years as president.

To conclude the event, Doug Dease, head of school, expressed his appreciation to Bundrick, the booster club, coaches, players and parents for their participation in and their support of the SGA athletic program.
