Howell to be honored by Wiregrass Athletic HOF
Howell will be one of nine local sports legends honored at the 16th annual ceremony at the Dothan Civic Center. Activities begin at 7 p.m. and tickets cost $30. A member of the Class of 1964, Alex was a four-year starter for the Bobcats and scored 2,001 points over his four-year career - before the three-point shot. He was ranked the No. 3 player in the state and offered scholarships by 12 Division I colleges before signing with Auburn. At Auburn he went on to be one of the Tigers' leading scorers and team captain his senior year and earned All SEC honorable mention. His academic career was also outstanding as he was selected to the Spades honor society and was among the top 10 men at Auburn in 1968. He earned his dentistry degree at the University of Alabama and returned to Blakely where he has practiced dentistry since 1973. Alex is a certified Lay Speaker at the First United Methodist Church and founder of the Living by Faith ministry which includes a radio show. He is married to the former Mary Clinkscales and they have two children, Sutton and Jefferson. The other inductees will be Troy University head football coach Larry Blakeney; long-time Wiregrass high school football coach Tom Vickers; Gene Dews, head softball coach at Wallace College; Yolanda Terry, a standout basketball player at Daleville High and Troy University. Don Maestri, Troy University's all-time winningest basketball coach; Randy Butler, longtime high school football coach recently hired as the recruiting coordinator and defensive ends coach at Troy University. Richmond Flowers Jr., star track and football athlete at the University of Tennessee and member of the Dallas Cowboys' 1970 Super Bowl team.
Leon Davis, longtime athletics director at the University of Montevallo and former president of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
