FACES Youth Council ends productive work year
The youth council, sponsored by Family Connection FACES, is made up of high school students who truly desire to bring about the success of their peers in all aspects of life. FACES' actions and projects for this year alone are proof of that. Members of the youth council are a mix of both Early County High School and Southwest Georgia Academy students. In order to become a member, a student must be nominated by either a current FACES member or a teacher. Meetings take place on the second Saturday of the month at the Family Learning Resource Center. During these meetings issues such as underage drug and alcohol use, teen pregnancy and teen depression are discussed. Members realize the seriousness of these issues in our community and they develop ways to raise awareness. During Red Ribbon Week at ECHS, several FACES members organized an assembly portraying the dangers of underage drug and alcohol use. Then, before prom, several FACES members organized another assembly for the ECHS student body that focused on the consequences of drinking and driving. At SGA, FACES members have been equally active. During the week of May 5 through 9, SGA FACES members organized activities for their school that raised awareness on youth depression and suicide. One of the activities was a penny drop in which they raised $200 that will go towards helping teens deal with problems such as depression. Members from both schools were heavily involved in the planning of Movie Night which took place April 25. The movie "National Treasure" was shown at Ray Knight Sports Complex, and all high school students were invited to attend. The Early County Sheriff 's Department set up a road course. Participants drove a golf cart through the course while wearing vision impairment goggles. These goggles impair vision and motor skills to represent intoxication. During the film, a handful of students were "ghosted out" to show a scale representation of how many teens die per year in alcohol and drug related accidents.
Even though the school year is ending, FACES members will still be hard at work planning for next year. Eleven members will be attending Georgia Teen Institute at Oxford College June 23-27. Josh Storey, who has been a member of the youth council for three years, will be working as student staff at GTI. These FACES members will bring back from GTI essential leadership skills that will further strengthen the FACES Youth Council.
