Rentz in Florida hall of fame
"It makes me feel good knowing I had a little part in developing the students into a good person with good character and becoming successful," Rentz said upon learning he had been selected for the honor. "Aubrey Rentz's induction is a proud testament to his 40-plus years of coaching and teaching genius," said Charlie Little, Freeport's assistant boys basketball coach. "He is the most revered and beloved man in the history of Freeport High School. There will be no more coach Rentz. He's old school and he broke the mold." Coach Rentz has been an icon in Freeport, Fla. since his coaching career began there in 1963. His contributions to the school and community were recognized in 1995 when the high school gym was named "Aubrey Rentz Gymnasium." Following his retirement in 2003, Rentz was honored at a banquet of which Destin newspaper columnist Cal Powell noted, "Tonight, Freeport will honor the most important man in school history." He led the boys basketball team to a state championship in 1968 and the girls track team to a state title in 1986. He was the architect of the football team, coaching the first three years of the program's existence. Rentz was involved in track from his first year at Freeport in 1963 until his last. During that span, he coached the boys and girls to a combined 21 district championships. Coaching the boys basketball team 11 years and the girls team 18 years his teams won 421 ganes, a 65 percent winning percentage.
Rentz etched a spot in Bobcat history as a fullback for the Bobcats in the 1950s. He left Blakely after the 1955 season to play football at Troy State Teachers College.
