$9.2 million city bond referendum on July 15 ballot

The Blakely City Council at their May 6 meeting approved a bond ordinance which allows for a bond referendum July 15 to gain voter approval of a bond issue to fund the expansion of the wastewater treatment plant and renovation of city hall. The resolution limits sewer bonds to $7,965,000 and city hall bonds to $1,235,000.

In other business the council voted to rezone the Hammond Development property on North Church from R-2 to Planned Unit Development.

The new housing complex called Blakely Commons is, according to the development company's website, a 64-home subdivision on a 27-acre site.Work began on the project site last week.

The council tabled addressing changes in the city's code until city attorney Tommy Coleman can address questions posed by council members.

The council also discussed a proposal by EC 2055 to perform economic development duties for the city for a fee of $80,000 per year. The mayor asked council members to consider what they thought the city could do financially in such an arrangement and what benefits the city might realize. Council members are expected to address the issue next month when City Attorney Tommy Coleman will also discuss the contract with the council.

The council approved a request to seek bids for a new Tiger mower.
