Two charged in sexual assaults Two local men have been arrested and are facing mulitple charges in connection with two separate sexual assaults here within the past two weeks. On April 26, a 16-year-old Early Co. High student was walking home from Saturday school classes when she saw a group of men smoking and drinking in front of the Royal Inn on Columbia Street. In an effort to avoid the men she turned and was walking behind the inn when she was jumped from behind. Her attacker pushed her down to the ground and told her "if you fight me I'll hurt you," and "if you tell I'll kill you!" After the assault the attacker fled the scene down a path leading to South Main Street. When the girl arrived home authorities were called and she was taken to the Early Memorial emergency room. Later that day authorities spotted a suspect fitting the description of the attacker given by the victim - a black male, approximately 5'10" weighing approximately 130, wearing a black cap with a red "A," black clothing and black military type shoes. Jeremy Hanks, 21, of 1387 Tarver Dr. was standing in front of the Royal Inn wearing the same cloths described by the rape victim when he was arrested. Hanks was charged with felony rape and felony kidnapping of a minor. He is being held in jail pending a bond hearing. Another Blakely man, Matthew Antonio Sparrow, 24, of Lot 18 in Tall Pines trailer park on South Boulevard, has been arrested and charged with statutory rape, child molestation and aggravated sodomy. A woman in Tall Pines told authorities she was looking for her 14-year-old niece at approximately 2 a.m. May 10 when she entered Sparrow's mobile home. She stated Sparrow ran from the bedroom naked. She found her niece in the bedroom where the sheets were covered with blood.
Sparrow fled the trailer on foot, but was found a short time later on Liberty Street where he was arrested. He has been released on a $9,000 bond.
