WANTED: Leadership!

The Blakely-Early County Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for the 2008 Leadership Early class which will begin in July and be completed in December.

In association with UGA's Fanning Institute, the objective of Leadership Early is to provide a resource of leadership for Early County to help guide the future for the community.

Each year up to 26 people are selected with emphasis on diversity of race, gender and background. The participants however, all have one thing in common: a demonstrated talent and commitment to community leadership.

Being chosen to participate in Leadership Early is an honor. Class members must make a firm commitment to attend each session of the program and its extracurricular activities.

Business owners are encouraged to identify at least one member of their workforce to sponsor in the program. The benefits of participation are an excellent means of professional development of staff for employers.

Leadership Early participants will enhance leadership skills and gain a stronger awareness of their community through a series of one-day sessions con- sisting of lectures, panel discussions, hands-on activities, tours, on-site visitation and informal question and answer sessions.

Topics include education, healthcare, city, county and state government, public safety, quality of life and economic development.

According to Brad Clenney, a participant of the class of 2007, "One of the most enriching aspects of the 2007 Leadership Early Class was getting to know people from our area who come from different backgrounds, but all want to see our community grow and move forward."

Lou Barrington, another 2007 Leadership Early alumni, put it this way, "I feel the greatest positive outcome was that it gave each participant a broader perspective of the issues and problems facing our county and new approaches and skills to address the issues. The strong emphasis on brainstorming, problem solving, teamwork, planning and execution were some of the benefits derived through having participated."

"Applications will be accepted through May 31. Space is limited so we are strongly suggesting those interested in participating submit their information as early as possible," stated chamber president Hilary Halford.
