A motley look at the news
All That's Fit to Print

Political candidates aren't the only ones grabbing headlines these days, they are just the only thing you hear news anchors report. There are other stories out there. Here are a few.

Monday night, a 69-yearold Florida woman found an 8-foot alligator in her kitchen. The gator apparently came in through the screened porch, entered an open sliding glass door and then wandered through the house until he, or she, found the kitchen.

I'm not sure if the alligator managed to grab a snack before he was nabbed by an animal control company, but he did break at least one plate during his visit.

Then, last week in Oregon, a Burmese python measuring 12 feet attempted to eat the pet store employee who was pulling the snake out of a cage for a customer.

The snake clamped down on the woman's hand, then began coiling around her arm and throwing her to the floor. Fortunately, someone called the police and a friend who happened to be in the store kept the snake from wrapping around the woman's neck until help could arrive.

The first responder was ready to slice and dice the snake, but the store clerk begged him not to kill the expensive python. Eventually, with the help of firemen, the snake was unwound from the woman and returned to its cage. According to news reports, the woman, policeman, firemen and snake are all fine.

A New York postal worker found herself accepting a delivery of a different sort. While delivering the mail on Monday, she looked up and saw a toddler in an open window. The next thing she knew, the mail carrier was catching the airborne child. The baby fell right into her arms and the mother came rushing out the door shortly afterwards.

Apparently, the mother had placed the child on a bed next to the window and turned her back for a moment.

A South Carolina preacher has been found guilty in a Russian court of smuggling ammunition into the country. He was sentenced to three years for his ill chosen gift to a minister friend in Russia. The S.C. minister was attempting to bring a box of ammunition for a hunting rifle for his Russian friend.

The U.S. Embassy has said it will work for a review or reduction of the sentence. Philip Miles, the Conway, S.C., minister has been in custody of the Russian authorities since Feb. 3.

And, since I'm writing this on Earth Day, it seems some grocery store chains are not abandoning the plastic grocery bag. We could say hurrah for paper, but it seems that some of the store chains want us to buy a reusable bag, which the store happens to sell. Of course, I would forget my reusable bag and have to carry my groceries out a couple of cans at a time. Of course, I have enough of those plastic bags at my house to last me for a year or two. I'll bet you do, too.
