Additional vaccines required All parents need to know that last year Georgia implemented additional vaccine requirements for children and adolescents. Additions to the immunization requirements are as follows: • A second dose of varicella (chickenpox) vaccine and a second dose of mumps vaccine or laboratory proof of immunity for children entering kindergarten or sixth grade or students entering a Georgia school for the first time. • Hepatitis A vaccine or laboratory proof of immunity for children enrolled in school or childcare facilities and were born on or after Jan. 1, 2006. • Vaccine to prevent pneumonia for children under five years of age and who are enrolled in childcare centers, Pre-K or Head Start. Parents are encouraged to check withthe local health department or the child's pediatrician about the shots a child needs to meet these new immunization requirements. The child's health care professional should document any vaccine administered on the new Form 3231, which is available at Early County Health Department and doctor's offices. Remember, children must have a current certificate on file. If a child attends more than one facility, a new and current certificate should be on file at each facility. Photocopies are acceptable. April 19-26 is National Infant Immunization Week. In observance of this important focus on immunizations, Early County Health Department is giving away prizes to all who receive any type of immunization during the week of April 21-25. Each day there will be an additional drawing for twodoor prizes donated by local merchants. A grand prize drawing will be held Friday, April 25. All individuals who receive any type of immunization during the week of April 21-25 will be eligible for the grand prize drawing.
As parents, by following these recommendations we can help further reduce vaccine preventable disease. For more information please call us at 723-3707.
