Qualifying begins April 28 Qualifying opens later this month for candidates who will be seeking office in the July 15 General Primary. The qualifying will open at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 28 and end at 12 noon on Friday, May 2. There will be a full slate of offices on the General Primary ballots to be filled by voters. Offices at the local level which will be on the July ballot include: Sheriff (Jimmie Murkerson), The political pot is heating Early Clerk of Superior Court (India Thompson), Tax Commissioner (Sylvia Hood), Coroner (Billy Joe Jordan), Land Surveyor (Lodge Holman), County Commission Chairman (Richard Ward) and County Commission seats for District 2 (Hank Jester) and District 4 (Perry Jarrett). When voters go to the polls in July they will also be considering political candidates for U.S. Representative for the slow 2nd Congressional District (Sanford Bishop), heating up in Pataula Judicial Circuit District Attorney (Charles Co.... Ferguson), Pataula Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge (Ronnie Joe Lane), State Senator for the 11th Senatorial District (John Bulloch) and Representative for House District 149 (Gerald Greene). District Attorney Charles Ferguson will not be seeking re-election. He announced last month that, after 31 years in office, he plans to retire. Longtime Early County coroner Billy Joe Jordan has also already announced that he will not be seeking re-election. He has served as coroner since 1979. The political pot is slow heating up in Early County compared to other communities. A number of community newspapers from across the state have been been running front page stories for several weeks about local persons intending to run for office, with qualifying still nearly two weeks away.
