Snakes and bees are back
Monday evening was nature night. Mamacita, normally lethargic after she nibbles at her overpriced cat food, sat on the screened porch transfixed. It was the first serpent of the season. He was sprawled out in the flower bed having recently supped himself. Rather than commiserate over full bellies, Mamacita was ready for action. I made her stay on the porch. I'm guessing our visitor was the rat or oak snake who lived in the shrubbery last year. I never saw him actually crawl anywhere all last summer. He spent the entire time suspended in the shrubbery. Hopefully, Mr. Snake will find somewhere to hide so Mamacita can't find him. I really don't want to be involved in any snake/cat battles. While the snake was lolling in the flower bed and the cat was watching it like a hawk, I heard a strange buzzing and found a honey bee caught in a spider web. It was a teensy tiny spider and a pretty chunky honey bee. The bee was beating its wings like crazy and the spider would run up real fast and shoot a little web at the bee. I have to say that the spider's method of dealing with the bee was much like my method of dealing with bees. Attack, run, attack, run. The spider appeared to be better at it than I am. Of course, he did have a web shooter and I usually just have a dud can of wasp killer which, by the way, you aren't supposed to shake before you spray. Wish I had read the directions earlier. Anyway, I pondered helping the honey bee out. I really thought about freeing him from the spider web. It wasn't like I was pulling for the spider or the bee. And I just hate to see things suffer, even bees as long as they haven't stung or are about to sting me. This bee just wasn't watching where he was flying. But then I thought about how that bee would sting the daylights out of me. I could see his stinger and I wasn't even wearing my glasses. It was primed and ready to zap something. It wasn't me. I'm not sure if it was the spider. I didn't hang around to watch. I just didn't want to be a part of the violence. I was pretty relieved when it finally got dark outside and I couldn't see what was actually going on out there. On a totally different note that has nothing to do with nature or much of anything else, I have just discovered that one can buy cheesecake by the tub. How great is that?
Imagine, a whole tub of cheesecake filling, the good part, sitting in the refrigerator section of the grocery store, just waiting on a girl and a spoon. Now that's a great idea.
