FCCLA teaches nutrition and fitness Early County High FCCLA members and advisors have spent this school year volunteering each Wednesday at the 21st Century after school program held at Early County Elementary School. They are teaching a nutrition and fitness program titled "Deal Me In" to third, fourth and fifth graders. In the past 30 years, the occurrence of overweight children has doubled and it is now estimated that one in five children in the United States is overweight. The growing concern about childhood obesity has developed due to minimal amount of physical activity in children and the lack of proper nutrition. According to a 2005 study conducted by the Georgia Department of Human Resources, one in four third grade students were classified as obese. The Deal Me In program is a six week curriculum that teaches children to make healthy choices about food and fitness. The lessons teach them to use the USDA's MyPyramid as a tool to help them make healthy choices. Each child is given a workbook which is full of fun games, puzzles and activities that provide them with important information in an exciting manner. The curriculum also recommends that children engage in one hour of physical activity each day. Time was spent in physical activity games both indoors and outdoors. The Deal Me In curriculum was developed by the Dairy Council of California. It also educates parents about nutrition through a parent newsletter. It covers topics such as healthy habits, quick breakfast, pyramid power, benefits of exercise and healthy recipes. Families are provided with Internet resources such as www.mealsmatter.org. and www.dairycouncilofca.org.
A team of three FCCLA members have utilized this project as a basis for their STAR Events competition. They received a gold medal at regional competition and will compete at state meeting in Athens on April 18. If they receive the highest score in Georgia, then they will advance to the national competition in Orlando, Fla. this summer.
