Relay for Life Friday night


The 2008 Early County Relay for Life is planned for Friday, April 11 on Court Square. Local teams have been planning and fundraising for the past four months in preparation for Relay. This year's goal is 65,000.

Events begin at 5:30 p.m. with the survivor registration, reception and dinner at the 2055 Cineplex on North Main Street. The dinner is sponsored by Georgia-Pacific. Participants will enjoy dinner and an inspirational speech by survivor Mary Hodges.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. on the south lawn of the courthouse with Dianne Harris, Don Crozier, Jay Palmer, Alex Howell and Blakely Cub Scouts taking part. Donor recognition will be presented by Cindy Conner and team recognition by Wallace O'Neal. Vocalists Will Wiley and Mia Pittman will also perform.

Immediately following the opening ceremonies, the first lap will be made by cancer survivors, the second by caregivers and the third by tri-state bikers.

At 7:30 creative theme and campsite judging begins followed by entertainment at 8 p.m. and the luminary service led by Sheila Sumner, vocalist Valarie Crocker and the ECHS Leo Club. The lighting of family candles, memory luminaries and presentation of living luminaries will take place at this time.

At 10 p.m. team competitive events take place including the No Talent Talent Show, Womanless Beauty Pageant and Tug of War.

Closing ceremonies begin at 11:30 p.m. with the final lap beginning at 11:45.

The Chamber of Commerce will serve as headquarters for Relay for Life. The square will be closed to thru traffic at 6 p.m. Parking is available at the banks, First Baptist Church, First Franklin, North Main from Ink Spot, Hutchins, Clenney, Brown & Hall and Stone lots.

Participating teams include Calhoun County Educators, City of Blakely, ECES, ECMS, ECHS, Early Memorial/Blakely Medical Group, First Methodist Church, Georgia-Pacific, Primary Care of Southwest Georgia, SGA, UBI and Wesley Chapel A.M.E.

Participating businesses include Funny Girl, Village Pizza, Old Mexico and Peking House.

The Relay for Life committee and teams invite everyone to come show their support in honor and memory of local lives touched by cancer. Teams will have a wide variety of items available for donation to the Relay goal.
