Kolomoki's Strickland named state's 'Ranger of the Year'

Senior Park Ranger Sid Strickland, left, with Kolomoki Park Manager Matt Bruner.
Senior Park Ranger Sid Strickland of Kolomoki Mounds State Historic Park was named Georgia's "Ranger of the Year" at the state's 2008 Ranger Conference. The award is the highest a park ranger can receive.

Strickland has worked at Kolomoki for 22 years and, according to park manager Matt Bruner, "No matter what the challenge, Sid always has a can-do attitude."

Bruner said Strickland was instrumental in many of the projects at the park last year including group shelter and restroom renovations, walking path and fish fence construction, and installation of new interpretive signs.

One of the hardest of the jobs was lowering Lake Kolomoki for installation of the fish fence. Bruner said the lake had to be drained so concrete footers could be poured, but enough water had to be kept flowing so no fish or wildlife would be lost. Heavy rains affected the level and flow of the creek, but Strickland managed to keep the lake at the level needed for the project and protect the fish and wildlife in the lake.

Strickland also works with natural resource management and cultural resource management.

Bruner said Strickland is a real asset to Kolomoki Mounds and the state park service.
